It’s summer!!! Today was my last day at my 2nd job – a job I absolutely love and will definitely miss until I go back in the fall – but I am really looking forward to having a little extra time this summer to slow down, write more, bike a lot, and simply rest. Preferably in the sun.
I kicked off my summer break by going with a good friend to see Maleficent tonight.
Wow. It was incredible.
Definitely not a kids’ movie – I would have rated it closer to PG-13 than the PG rating it got – but so well done. I won’t give any spoilers – I will simply say that with the exception of the three fairy godmothers, this movie was well-written, well-acted, and well-filmed. I loved it – and I’m already looking forward to the day it comes out on DVD.

As I started to downshift into summer a bit this afternoon, it suddenly occurred to me that I hadn’t seen anything from Preston Yancey pop up in my inbox in quite a while. So I went over to his site to find this wonderful post, and all I can say is bravo. Breaks = awesome. And sometimes you just need one.
This is my favorite part of his post:
“If you’ve got a book in you, it’s wherever you are. It’s not going anywhere. …. There’s only one way to write a book. And that’s to write it. That’s the ‘hard truth that nobody wants to hear’ … you just have to do it. I plan to do something about that this month, too. After I’ve gotten in some good rest.
I’m shifting my Sabbath to Saturdays for the summer, and so looking forward to it. I am particularly looking forward to puttering around the kitchen, putting something together in the crock pot for dinner, and watching the Belmont Stakes (and all the pre-race footage) tomorrow. I love horse-racing, and I try to make a point of watching the Triple Crown races every spring. And this year’s contender, California Chrome, has a really good shot, I think. Tomorrow’s race will be one people will talk about for years if he wins – he’d be the first horse since I was three years old to win the Triple Crown. How cool would that be? 🙂
I plan to do a fair amount of reading this summer – some for fun, some for research, and some that I suspect will be the sort of books that are like friends – coming along at just the right moment to bring healing or a new perspective (or both.) I am really looking forward to working my way thru Invitation to Tears and reviewing it later this month. Jonalyn Fincher is hosting a read along of the book later this summer, and I think it will be an amazing conversation. You can learn more about the book here.
