7 Quick Takes Friday (vol. 47): kindness, snow, and pioneering

— 1 —

Confession: I totally fell asleep before finishing my seven quick takes on Friday.  Therefore, welcome to 7QT: the Saturday edition.

It snowed this Friday.

Not a lot, and it pretty much only stuck to windshields early this morning, but it did snow today.

I didn’t pray for it, and I’m sure I’ll be over it by the end of March, but there’s just something about the first snowfly that makes me incredibly happy.  I’m sure it has everything to do with growing up on the Connecticut coast, where 2 inches of snow merited school closings because it so rarely happened and no one knew what to do about it – but I love snow.  There’s something so peaceful and quiet and serene about it.

I know I’m likely in the minority, loving snow so much – and trust me, I don’t particularly love shoveling it by the foot – but I do actually like it, like on a Lorelai Gilmore -type level.

(If you didn’t catch the reference, try Season 1, Episode 8: Love and War and Snow, on Netflix.)

Snow is a gift, and I’m grateful for it.

This week’s most awesome moment: earlier this week, I finally paid off the last of the medical bills from that bicycle accident.  It’s a little surreal, actually – I don’t think I’ve fully registered it emotionally yet – but it does feel like something worth celebrating, having at least that piece of closure accomplished.  🙂

More soul work to do, of course – but still.  It’s good to finally be financially free from the repercussions.

Sarah Bessey shared a link this week to “13 Signs You’re A Classic INFJ” – and I was instantly intrigued, considering my “J” strength is close enough to a “P” that they are fairly interchangeable.  This list of signs insanely accurate, and I am so wowed by the way this list interacts with my StandOut traits.

I was chatting with one of my besties Friday evening, and she was wondering aloud if she should text someone she hadn’t heard from in awhile.  For various reasons, she was leaning towards not, and I ever so compassionately suggested, “But what if he got hit by a bus?”

“Oh, no – he’s fine.  I follow him on Instagram.  He’s been posting pictures this week, so I know he’s okay.”

I’m not sure what this says, but my first thought was how different pioneering would have been with Instagram.  Picture two women sitting in the back of a covered wagon in the woods, waiting for their husbands to come back from hunting.

“But what if he got attacked by a panther?”

“Oh, no – he’s fine.  I follow him on Instagram…”

I’m telling you, it would have been a game changer.

This week I came across a really cool alternative to the Elf on a Shelf tradition: Kindness Elves.  They do some crazy things, these elves, but they also teach kindness and compassion.  I enjoy watching friends post pictures at Christmastime of the things their elves do (I have some really creative friends) – but the Kindness Elves don’t just show up in funny places; they leave notes cheering kids on for being kind and caring, and suggesting fun activities that model kindness, like baking cookies for a neighbor or visiting someone in the hospital.  If you’re looking for a fun Christmas tradition with some true meaning behind it, this could be it.

Speaking of kindness – I was in the drive-thru at a coffee shop yesterday, and the person in front of me paid for my chai.  It totally floored me; I’ve done that sort of thing for others in the past, but being on the receiving end of it was really cool, and reminded me that one small act of kindness can go a long way towards making someone’s day.  What will you do this week to bless someone?

Meet Happy
Simple Felicity is, at its heart, a blog based on the unshakeable belief that happiness really isn't all that complicated. It's often found in the simplest of things: good food, good books, and good company. So those are the things I write about, along with a few other things that really matter to me, including faith and feminism. A bit about me: My name is Happy. I have an amazing talent for misplacing my keys, a deep appreciation for whomever looked at the coffee bean and thought, "Hey, I wonder what would happen if I roasted this?", and road trips to Michigan are pretty much my favorite.
