chosen by (and choosing) hope

2018 was a really long year, y’all. So much life happened. Some of it was great, and some of it was awful, and some of it was fairly mundane – but it was definitely a year that I can look back on and see how it (how I) was shaped by my word for the year (which was “onward“).

So here we are again, at the beginning of another new year, and I find myself wondering what this one will bring. Much like last year, my word for 2019 chose me, but unlike last year, this year’s word didn’t really require any thought at all. I’ve simply known since sometime around Thanksgiving that my OneWord365 for this year will be hope.

The fact that I am slightly worried that I’m seriously going to need it probably indicates that I already do. But hope is a good thing to have and hold on to, so I’m choosing to hope that hope had a good reason for choosing me this year, starting to make a list of the things (both small and not-so-small) for which I’m hoping, and reminding myself to remember the goodness of the One in whom we can always put our hope.

Some of the things I’m hoping for are things I can do something about, and some are not. Hope is both a noun and a verb – you can have it, and you can also act on it. I like that I’m going to get to partner in realizing some of my own hopes and dreams this year, but I also (at least at this moment) appreciate that I can’t just make everything happen. (My ongoing adventures in Brooklyn wouldn’t be much of an adventure without a bit of impossibility and a few plot twists, now, would they?)

I considered posting my list – it includes a few of the general things that I think we all hope for: health, happiness, etc. – as well as a few very specific things – but I think I’m going actually going to keep it to myself and simply see what happens.

What about you? What are you hoping for this year? Whatever it is, I hope you find it.

May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you. – Psalm 33:22

More to come,
Happy

Meet Happy
Simple Felicity is, at its heart, a blog based on the unshakeable belief that happiness really isn't all that complicated. It's often found in the simplest of things: good food, good books, and good company. So those are the things I write about, along with a few other things that really matter to me, including faith and feminism. A bit about me: My name is Happy. I have an amazing talent for misplacing my keys, a deep appreciation for whomever looked at the coffee bean and thought, "Hey, I wonder what would happen if I roasted this?", and road trips to Michigan are pretty much my favorite.
